Chanel has planted its flag in San Diego with a brand-new freestanding boutique at Westfield UTC, marking the first time the luxury house has operated outside a department-store format in the county. The 16,000-square-foot, two-story building opened October 8 on La Jolla Village Drive, joining a stretch of UTC that already includes Hermès, Bulgari, and Zegna — a clear signal that the University City shopping corridor, just inland from La Jolla, is becoming one of Southern California’s heavyweight luxury retail destinations.
The store was designed by Peter Marino, the architect behind Chanel’s other California locations in Beverly Hills, Costa Mesa, San Francisco, and Palo Alto. Marino said he drew inspiration from the Case Study Houses and the relationship between architecture and landscape, and it shows: a white stucco façade wraps around a central courtyard anchored by an 18th-century lion sculpture, while seven ground-floor salons pick up coastal cues with wave motifs and shades of blue and turquoise.
Inside, shoppers will find the full range of Chanel’s offerings — ready-to-wear (the salons open with Matthieu Blazy’s Fall-Winter 2026 collection), leather goods, shoes, fragrance and beauty, plus a dedicated Watches and Fine Jewelry salon furnished with Louis XV pieces and a Goossens chandelier. Upstairs, a private VIP lounge opens onto a wraparound terrace overlooking the courtyard. The boutique doubles as something of an art space too, with pieces by Vik Muniz and Vera Lutter on display and a commissioned portrait of Coco Chanel by Norbert Brunner greeting visitors at the entrance.
Before this opening, San Diego-area Chanel clients had to shop a smaller in-store boutique inside Neiman Marcus at Fashion Valley. A standalone store of this scale is a meaningful bet on the region’s luxury spending power, and it puts the La Jolla/University City area squarely on the map for high-end retail alongside the usual Rodeo Drive and South Coast Plaza comparisons.
For the small businesses and specialty shops that surround UTC, a flagship opening like this tends to lift a lot of boats — more foot traffic, more out-of-town shoppers, and more reason for visitors to spend a full day in the neighborhood rather than popping in and out.
