Vista’s Trendy Department Store to Close After 20 Years

Vista’s Trendy Department Store to Close After 20 Years

A longtime fixture of North County retail is closing its doors. Trendy Department Store, located in the shopping center at the northeast corner of Civic Center Drive and South Santa Fe Avenue in Vista, has announced it will shut down by the end of 2026, according to The Coast News. The store has operated at that corner for more than 20 years, selling clothing, jewelry, bridal gowns, tuxedos, and custom embroidery at bargain prices to generations of North County shoppers.

The closure isn’t about slow sales or a changing market. Per site manager Noy Chanthaboury, the property owner is retiring and has put the building up for sale, bringing the family-run business to a close along with it. It’s a familiar story for small, independent retailers built around a single owner-operator: when that person is ready to step back, the business and the building’s future are often tied together.

Trendy’s closing also adds another vacancy to a shopping center that has already seen turnover. A second Trendy location in Escondido closed roughly five years ago, and the same Vista center has had a vacant storefront since a Vons supermarket closed there about four years back. For a stretch of Santa Fe Avenue that’s been a retail anchor for North County families, it’s a reminder of how much commercial real estate in the region is still working through post-pandemic shifts in shopping habits and ownership transitions.

For North County business owners, the news is also a useful nudge. Succession planning and a clear read on your lease terms matter just as much as day-to-day sales. A retiring landlord, an expiring lease, or a sale of the underlying property can end a business overnight, even one that’s profitable and well-loved by regulars. If you own a shop in Vista, Oceanside, Escondido, or San Marcos, it’s worth having a conversation now with your landlord about long-term plans, and lining up options in case the building changes hands.

The closure also opens a space worth watching: a 20-year retail location with built-in foot traffic near Vista’s civic center corridor won’t stay empty for long, and whichever business claims it next will inherit a loyal customer base looking for a reason to keep shopping local.
